Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116500LN: The Cult-Hero, First to Claim the “Panda” Nickname

Rolex has a history of producing white-dial Daytona watches, like the reference 6239 “Paul Newman” and the reference 16520 “Zenith”. But the model that put "panda" into the mainstream vocabulary was the 40mm Oystersteel reference 116500LN in 2016.

The nickname stemmed from the white lacquer dial with its three black sub-dial rings that pop out from the black Cerachrom bezel. Powering the model is the Calibre 4130, Rolex’s first-ever in-house chronograph movement for the Daytona, which had previously relied on the hand-wound Valjoux 72 and later the Zenith El Primero-based Calibre 4030.

Arguably, Rolex’s “Panda” dial is the most distinctive, able to be spotted on the wrist within a heartbeat, it is that recognisable. The 116500LN is one of the most iconic references in the whole of the Crown’s history, yet it has only reached its 10th birthday this year. Again, another staple of how impactful the 116500LN is.

A decade later from its unveiling, the only place to buy the 116500LN is through the pre-owned market, as the model was discontinued in 2023. Rolex updated the collection with the 126500LN, featuring a refined aesthetic and an updated in-house Calibre 4131. Although the 126500LN was released as an upgrade, many enthusiasts and collectors prefer the 116500LN due to its cult-hero status.

In recent years, Grand Seiko has become a solid luxury watch brand to buy from, and the model that has been gaining popularity is the Spring Drive watch. For those who are not familiar with a spring drive movement, it is commonly referred to as a “hybrid” like a car. The spring drive is an innovative movement produced by Japanese giants Seiko, which blends the traditional mainspring of a mechanical watch with the precision and accuracy of a quartz regulator.
