How did Hublot Emerge?

Hublot was founded in 1980 by Italian watchmaker Carlo Crocco who sought to take the horological world by storm. Due to Crocco’s background of sailing, he aimed for Hublot to take inspiration from elements associated with the water sport and apply them to their watches. Mainly wanting Hublot watches to be versatile, perfect for any occasion whether that be a special occasion or worn for activities. 

Originally, Crocco named the brand MDM Geneve before eventually gaining the name “Hublot" which was taken from the French word ‘porthole,’ a small round window often found on ships. For the first Hublot watch, there was clear inspiration taken from the shape and look of a porthole as the bezel incorporated the window’s design. 

A decade before Hublot’s beginning, there was a rise in luxury sports watches, seeing two of the most influential models released: the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 5042ST and Patek Philippe Nautilus 3700. Due to this, Crocco’s aim was to create a sports watch that symbolised luxury whilst fitting to this era of watchmaking. 

So enter Hublot’s first ever watch, the Classic Fusion which was crafted in gold and partnered with a comfortable rubber strap. Although this is a configuration that is popular in modern watchmaking, Hublot were the first to combine a precious metal piece with a rubber strap meaning the Classic Fusion was a revolution!

Flashforward to today and Hublot is one of the biggest watch brands in the world, known for their insane craftsmanship and innovative designs being a symbol of haute horlogerie and luxury.

The Hublot Range and Collection

Despite displaying a small range of named models, within Hublot’s catalogue lies so many different and unique timepieces that are meticulously crafted using various materials and complications. 

The Hublot Big Bang

Released in 2005, the Big Bang was a huge success for Hublot! This Hublot watch went against the conventions of watchmaking at the time due to its bold and oversized design whilst also paying tribute to the brand’s sporty roots by incorporating a chronograph function into the Big Bang.

The Hublot Big Bang won two awards: the ‘Design Prize’ in the Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix and the ‘Sports Watch Prize’ at the Watch of the Year ceremony in Japan. This Hublot timepiece perfectly highlighted modern watchmaking and has stood the test of time well, appealing to newer generations year by year.

In 2014, Hublot sought to enhance the Big Bang line to create a new edition called the Spirit of Big Bang with some key features including a tonneau-shaped case, screws on the bezel and openworked dial. This Hublot timepiece focuses heavily on using skeletonisation which requires high levels of skill and craftsmanship being manufactured in all types of materials. 

Over time, this Hublot watch has evolved through the use of unique materials like ceramic or carbon fibre and their in-house movements such as chronographs and tourbillons, all displayed through different finishes and case sizes. The cost of a Hublot Big Bang varies from entry-level of under £10,000, all the way to very expensive prices of over £100,000!

The Hublot Classic Fusion

Despite being part of the Hublot’s beginnings, the Classic Fusion was reintroduced in 2008 as an attempt to modernise the model whilst using the aesthetics of the first ever Classic Fusion that was released in 1980.

Mainly, the Hublot Classic Fusion incorporates a polished dial with bezel screws crafted in different materials such as gold or titanium. The Classic Fusion is seen as Hublot’s entry level watch with prices starting from just over £5,000 and is an excellent Hublot watch if you are searching for a piece that is simplistic and sporty.

Hublot’s first ever watch was the Classic Fusion and was an essential part of the brand’s birth and upcoming, becoming a symbol and staple to Hublot’s legacy. 

The Hublot King Power

Having already challenged the conventions of watch making with Big Bang, Hublot went a step further to create the King Power which features a 48mm case!
