The Rolex Day-Date 36 is the original President, the watch that has spelled out the day of the week in full at twelve o'clock since 1956. Made only in gold or platinum, it remains the classic size and the purist's choice. Time 4 Diamonds, London-based since 2005, authenticates and warranties every Day-Date we sell.
Why the Day-Date 36 is called the President
When it launched in 1956, the Day-Date was the first wristwatch to show both the date and the day of the week written out in full. It has been worn by heads of state for decades, and the three-piece President bracelet, created alongside it, remains almost exclusive to the line. The 36mm case is the original format and stayed the only size for nearly fifty years. It wears like a true dress watch: compact under a cuff and unmistakably formal.
The Day-Date has only ever been made in precious metal, never steel. Options run across 18ct yellow, white and Everose gold and platinum, usually with a fluted bezel, though platinum models use a smooth bezel. The day appears in a window at twelve, available in a wide choice of languages, and the date sits at three under a Cyclops lens.

It brings the Chronergy escapement, a 70-hour power reserve and Superlative Chronometer accuracy of minus two to plus two seconds per day. Earlier references such as the 118xxx and 182xx series used the long-serving calibre 3155.
Buying a pre-owned Rolex Day-Date 36
Because the Day-Date spans decades and metals, the right choice comes down to era, metal, dial and bezel. We check dial originality, bracelet stretch and clasp condition on every piece before listing, which matters most on older references. Buyers who prefer a larger case in the same family often look at the Rolex Day-Date 40, while those after a broader dial choice can browse Rolex dials.

Rolex Day-Date 36 FAQs
Is the Rolex Day-Date made in steel?
No. The Day-Date has only ever been produced in 18ct gold or platinum. There is no steel Day-Date.
What movement is in the current Day-Date 36?
The current 1282xx Day-Date 36 uses the calibre 3255, with a 70-hour power reserve. It replaced the long-running calibre 3155.
What is the difference between the Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40?
The main difference is case size. The 36 is the classic original format, while the 40, introduced in 2015, is the larger modern option. Both use the calibre 3255 and the President bracelet.
