Cartier dials are among the most replaced and most customised parts we handle, driven by the Santos and Ballon Bleu. Stock and bespoke work covers factory replacement dials, Roman numeral conversions, full diamond pavé and gem-set builds, all matched by reference and fitted in our London workshop, Time 4 Diamonds.
Cartier dials we stock
Our Cartier dial work splits into three categories that account for almost all orders.
Factory Cartier dials. Original Cartier dials sourced through our trade network and matched by reference to the case. These are the route for straight replacement of a scratched, faded or damaged dial without changing the look of the watch. Most factory stock is for Santos de Cartier and Santos 100 medium references.
Custom Cartier dials. Dials built to specification on a factory base blank. Options include Roman numeral colourways, lacquer finishes, applied markers, diamond-set indices and full pavé bases. Custom is the route for buyers who want a look Cartier does not offer at retail, such as black Roman numerals on a pavé ground or a colour-matched Ballon Bleu dial.
Diamond and pavé conversions. A large share of our Cartier dial orders are diamond builds, particularly on the Santos 100 and Ballon Bleu. Formats run from single-row diamond markers through full pavé bases, plus exotic gem-set work including mother-of-pearl leopard, panthère and horse motif dials.
Roman numerals, chemin de fer and the secret signature
Cartier dials share a set of design codes that any replacement or custom build has to respect to look correct. Getting these right is what separates a proper Cartier dial from a generic aftermarket part.
The core elements are bold Roman numerals, a chemin de fer railway-track minute ring around the perimeter and blued steel sword-shaped hands. Most Cartier watches also carry a secret signature, a tiny Cartier wordmark concealed inside one of the Roman numerals, usually the VII. It was introduced in the early 20th century as an anti-forgery measure and collectors actively look for it. Original factory dials carry it. Any custom dial we build to Cartier specification is finished to match the model's correct numeral style, track and signature placement.
The blue sapphire cabochon crown is a case feature rather than a dial element, but it sets the tone buyers expect from the dial. Lacquer, guilloché and sunray finishes all appear across the Tank, Santos, Ballon Bleu and Roadster families, and each model has its own correct combination.
Santos, Ballon Bleu and Tank dial replacement
The Santos is the most common Cartier dial replacement we handle. The squared case and exposed screws make the dial visually central, so scratches and ageing show quickly. We cover the Santos de Cartier, Santos 100 large, midi and XL Chronograph in both factory and custom formats, including white and black Roman numeral builds and full diamond pavé.
The Ballon Bleu is the second most requested, across the 28mm, 36mm and 42mm cases. Stock covers factory Roman numeral dials and custom diamond pavé, including pavé with applied Roman numerals and mother-of-pearl bases. Tank dials, across the Louis Cartier, Française, Solo and Américaine, follow the same factory and custom logic and are quoted by reference on brief.
Diamond and gem-set Cartier dials
Diamond Cartier dial work ranges from single-row markers through full pavé. Standard options include VS1 round brilliant markers, fully diamond-paved bases, mother-of-pearl bases with diamond indices and exotic motif dials such as leopard print and the Cartier panthère. Setting and finishing is done in-house alongside the watchmaker who carries out the fit, which avoids the tolerance problems that come from outsourced dial work.
On the Santos 100 and Ballon Bleu, the most requested specifications are full pavé bases, pavé with retained black Roman numerals and matched diamond bezel and dial sets. Rose gold and two-tone pavé builds are also common.
How the order process works
Dial pricing on individual product listings includes the part and fitting. Our watchmakers dismantle the watch, fit the new dial, reassemble, test for timekeeping accuracy and water resistance where relevant, then return the piece ready to wear. Turnaround on standard fits is typically five to ten working days. Bespoke diamond and gem-set builds take longer and are quoted on brief. The same workshop handles a full Cartier service alongside the dial fit where the piece needs one.
UK next-day delivery is included on outbound shipping. International shipping runs via FedEx. Middle East clients typically brief over WhatsApp; UK buyers over email or in person at our London showroom on More London Riverside.
For anything outside the dial work above, including full case and bezel customisation or sourcing a base watch to build on, brief the piece through the banner below. We also stock Cartier watches for buyers building from a base, and full bespoke watches for unrestricted briefs.
Frequently asked questions
What is the secret signature on a Cartier dial?
It is a tiny Cartier wordmark hidden inside one of the printed Roman numerals, most often the VII. Cartier introduced it in the early 20th century as an anti-forgery measure. Original factory dials carry it, and any custom dial we build to Cartier specification is finished to match the correct placement.
Can you replace a Cartier Santos dial?
Yes. The Santos is the most common Cartier dial replacement we carry out, across the Santos de Cartier, Santos 100 large, midi and XL Chronograph. We fit both factory replacement dials and custom or diamond-set dials, matched by reference to your case.
Do you stock factory or custom Cartier dials?
Both. Factory dials are original Cartier parts sourced through our trade network. Custom dials are built on factory base blanks then refinished, diamond-set or gem-set in our London workshop. Every listing states which format it is.
Can I get a diamond pavé Cartier dial?
Yes. Diamond pavé is one of our most-requested Cartier dial builds, on the Santos 100 and Ballon Bleu in particular. Options run from single-row diamond markers to full pavé bases, pavé with retained Roman numerals and matched diamond bezel and dial sets. Brief the base reference and marker format required.
Does fitting a custom dial affect my Cartier warranty?
Any modification to an original Cartier watch will typically void the remaining manufacturer warranty. Time 4 Diamonds provides a 12 month warranty on the dial, fitting and movement timing post-service. Buyers who intend to maintain a factory warranty should not modify the watch.
How much does a Cartier dial cost?
Factory and custom dials on the Santos and Ballon Bleu typically sit in the low to mid four figures including fitting. Diamond-set and pavé Cartier dials scale into the mid and upper four figures, with full gem-set and exotic motif builds quoted case by case depending on stone grade and quantity. Individual listings carry current pricing.
